Position: Apprentice Carpenter, First Year
Employer: Mr. David's Flooring
Employed: 10 months
Before Demitri Hall came to YJC, he was unsure what to do with his life. He knew he wanted to be able to take care of his family, but he needed a job that would allow him to establish financial independence in order to do this.
After completing the Automotive Training Program with YJC and learning hands-on, transferable skills, including measurements, the proper use of tools, etc., Demitri obtained additional training through a program with the City of Evanston. He secured a position with Mr. David’s Flooring, working as an apprentice carpenter. He has earned regular raises and joined the union during his time working.
It wasn’t always easy, though.
“To get to where I am today, it took a lot of hard work,” says Demitri. “At times I did want to give up.”
Today, Demitri is enrolled in a four-year carpenter program as an apprentice carpenter. He is being trained in flooring, from wood to carpet to vinyl, and will receive regular pay raises throughout the program. At the end of the four years, Demitri will be a certified journeyman carpenter, earning $40 or more per hour.
Congratulations, Demitri! Hard work pays off and we are very proud.
