To land that summer job, be creative

Chicago Tribune, June 25, 2008

Still don't have a summer job? They exist, but teenagers must be creative in finding them, said Sacella Smith, executive director of the Youth Job Center of Evanston. Smith says . . .

Spread the word: Network and tell everyone you know that you are looking for work.

Keep it simple: Develop a simple resume.

Dress to impress: Dress professionally even if you are just completing an application. You only get one chance to make a first impression.

Go it alone: Apply for jobs alone rather than with a group of friends.

Be confident: Stand up straight and act mature.

Follow up: Get the name of the hiring manager and be persistent.

Keep at it: Do not be discouraged if you don't get a position. Stay dedicated to the search.

Build a résumé: Volunteer if you are unable to find a paying job. Volunteering adds to your résumé and could lead to a job later.
