High School Career Advisor
What do you like about your job?
I like that I am in a position to support youth and young adults to figure out their passion and filling a need that is crucial for youth and young adults of color. Another aspect of my job that I like is that we’re breaking the norm of “you have to go to college” right after high school. That is not the reality for most of our youth. As a non-traditional route taker myself, working after high school helped me provide for my family, gain valuable workforce skills, and kept me busy.
Where did you work before YJC?
I worked at Mikva Challenge - empowering youth of color to take pride in their community/schools instead of looking at it through a deficit-based lens, and advocating to improve those good things.
What was your first job?
My first job was handing out self-care fliers on the streets of the Southwest side of Chicago through Neighborhood Recovery Initiative (NRI)
What did you learn from your first job?
I learned that I love interacting with people. A smile and getting to know someone goes a long way!
Has your career path gone how you expected?
Not at all. I envisioned myself going into the medical field or becoming a lawyer. Nevertheless, I love where I am now.
During my sophomore year of high school, with the help of my school counselor, I participated in Steve Harvey’s Mentoring Camp.
