Terrance

Position: Grocery Clerk
Employer: Jewel-Osco
Employed since: November 2016

Terrance first came to YJC in late 2015 and completed Job-Readiness Training this January. After meeting with his Career Advisor and learning about YJC's programs, Terrance enrolled in the Automotive Program. Terrance enjoyed the classes and learned a lot, but struggled with attendance and punctuality during his internship at Supreme Auto, a local mechanic. He received a Certification of Completion for the course-work of the Auto Program in June 2016, but still wasn't quite sure of his next step.

Terrance reconnected with YJC in the fall of 2016 and attended the fall job fair in October. At the job fair, Terrance was able to connect with several employers and complete their applications. He felt confident about his chances with Jewel-Osco and was hired shortly after the fair. Terrance started working at Jewel a few weeks later. Initially he wasn't able to get many hours, only working about 10-20 each week. However, as Terrance learned the duties of his job, he proved that he was a reliable and consistent employee, even while commuting an hour and a half from his Southside apartment to work in Evanston. Now he works almost 35 hours a week and has consistently made it to work on time.

Recently, Terrance's Career Advisor got to see him in action at his job (see picture above). Terrance said that he is really enjoying his job and his teammates. YJC is proud of Terrance for his dedication and commitment and so pleased that he has found work that he truly enjoys. If Terrance continues to apply the things he's learned at Jewel to his future endeavors, we know he will continue to be successful.
