Darius tells us in his own words about his career journey and his experience with YJC.

Tell us about your background—a snapshot of life before joining YJC.
Before joining YJC, I attended South Suburban College, where I began building a strong foundation in technology.

Through my coursework, such as Computer Logic, Networking, and A+ Certification Prep, I gained essential IT skills and hands-on experience. I developed a close relationship with my instructors and joined a college technology group, where I participated in projects like diagnosing systems in the server room and learning how they operate.

These experiences helped solidify my passion for technology and problem-solving. Additionally, I consistently sought out opportunities to apply my knowledge, including collaborating on group projects and exploring real-world applications of IT concepts, which prepared me for the next steps in my career journey.

How did you find YJC?
I found YJC through a combination of community outreach and online research. While exploring career development opportunities, I came across YJC's programs by their focus on empowering individuals with job training and placement with an organization called National Able.

I also heard positive feedback about YJC from peers in my network who had benefited from similar initiatives. Their commitment to equipping participants with practical skills and support to achieve sustainable employment aligned perfectly with my career goals, making it an ideal program for me to join.

Why did you decide to become a YJC client?
I decided to become a YJC client because I wanted to take my career to the next level by gaining additional support, resources, and training. YJC stood out as a program that not only focuses on workforce development but also provides personalized guidance to help clients succeed. I was particularly drawn to their emphasis on practical skills, career readiness, and networking opportunities.

I saw YJC as a chance to bridge any gaps in my knowledge, refine my professional skills, and access a network of employers who value the skills I bring to the table. Becoming a YJC client felt like a strategic step toward achieving my long-term goals, both professionally and personally.

Tell us about your wins! Since joining YJC, have you gotten a job, discovered a career goal, gotten a certification, etc.?
Since joining YJC, I’ve achieved several wins, including securing paid internships. One notable internship was with Mikva Challenge, where I applied my skillsets in a data entry position. This role allowed me to put into practice the skills I’ve gained, such as managing data accurately and efficiently, while contributing to the organization’s mission.

These experiences have helped me grow professionally and reinforced my passion for IT and data management. I even solidified my interest in web development as a long-term path.

With the support of YJC, I’ve built stronger professional skills, which helped me secure certifications like the JavaScript certificate I earned from the YJC/i.c.stars program.

What’s your favorite thing about your new field?
My favorite thing about my new field, particularly in web development, is the constant opportunity to learn and problem-solve. Every project presents new challenges, and I enjoy finding innovative solutions to meet those challenges. Whether it's troubleshooting technical issues, building websites, or analyzing data, the dynamic nature of the field keeps me engaged and motivated.

Additionally, the impact my work has on others—whether it’s creating websites for clients or contributing to a project that helps an organization—gives me a sense of fulfillment. The ability to continuously grow and have a tangible effect on the world around me is truly rewarding.

What are your plans for the future? (And how is YJC helping you prepare?)
My ultimate goal is to work for the state of Illinois as a Data Processing Technician or in another related position. YJC is helping me prepare for this by providing valuable career guidance, sharpening my technical skills, and helping me refine my job-seeking strategies.

The program has also helped me build confidence in my abilities and connected me with professional networks that will be crucial as I pursue opportunities in the public sector. With YJC’s support, I feel more equipped to achieve my career goals and make a meaningful contribution in my field.

I also aspire to help younger people find their career paths and guide them, just like my coach, Destanee Williams, did for me. I’m inspired by the support and direction I received and want to pay it forward by mentoring others, helping them build confidence, and providing the resources they need to succeed in their careers. This would be a fulfilling way to make a positive impact on future generations.
