Lamont was referred to YJC in early April by our partners at My Block, My Hood, My City. Lamont grew up on the West side of Chicago, surrounded by intelligent and talented mentors who pushed him forward every day. Lamont describes himself as someone who is always pursuing knowledge and a creative, passionate individual. He came to YJC eager to learn about the culinary industry and learn new skills to set him up for success in his future career.

Shortly after enrolling in YJC, Lamont was placed into a paid work experience as an Associate at the Chicago Food Stop. In this role, Lamont learned from Chicago culinary leaders while perfecting his soft skills like customer service. Lamont shared that his time at the Chicago Food Stop was great; he loved talking with his coworkers and customers, and the experience boosted his confidence. His favorite part about working with YJC has been “all the room to be creative and unique and that my Career Coach allows me to be myself.”

Since enrolling in YJC, Lamont shared that the most beneficial thing he’s learned is to keep going. Even when you are struggling, don’t give up. There’s always someone willing to help and give you the helping hand you need.
