March 2016 Client of the Month
Position: International Student Adviser
Employer: Northwestern University
Employed since: August 2013
When Stephanie came to YJC in 2011, she already had her Bachelor’s Degree from Miami University and a permanent job with employer partner Banana Republic. Her supervisor, recognizing her talents and potential to have a rewarding career outside of retail, referred her to YJC. Stephanie loved her job, but she always desired more, hoping to work in the field of International Studies one day. Stephanie was referred to YJC’s Women Invested in Learning & Livelihoods (WILL) career advancement initiative and was accepted into the program, along with 29 other women. While in the program, Stephanie perfected her resume and set strategic goals to land a more professional position in which she could grow. She was paired with a professional mentor, Ms. Coleen Burrus, who was, at the time, the 9th Ward Alderman of Evanston and the Senior Director of Corporate Engagement at Northwestern University. Not only was Stephanie able to land an awesome entry-level position as a Program Assistant at Northwestern in the Corporate Relations department in 2012, but she is still working for the university today and looking to move up! Stephanie has retained her position for almost three years now, obtaining yearly raises and finally working in the department she was most passionate about, International Studies! This year, Stephanie will also earn her Master’s Degree in Liberal Studies with a focus on International/Global Studies. As a perk of her employment, she was able to utilize Northwestern’s tuition reimbursement incentive and save money on her advanced education goals.
YJC is VERY proud of Stephanie and all of her accomplishments over the past 5 years. She was awarded WILL Woman of the Year in 2013 and the WILL Ambassador Award in 2014. Go Stephanie! YJC is confident that you WILL succeed, forever and ever! Great job!
