JASMINE

AGE: 23
POSITION:
Phlebotomist
EMPLOYER: RUSH University Medical Center

Jasmine is a 23-year-old mother of three who was, in her own words, “ready for a change and a set future for my children and I!” Interested in exploring a healthcare career path, she met with career coach Sara to learn about YJC and quickly signed up for services. “I decided to become a client for the simple fact that my mentor Sara was hands-on and ready to get me started on my path from day one!”

That path included workforce readiness training, one-on-one career coaching, and enrollment in a phlebotomy program. As Jasmine journeyed through those steps, she enjoyed having a supportive mentor to guide her along. “My work coach was incredible,” she shares. “She communicated everything effectively while also providing me with all the necessary tools to complete my education and also securing employment.” Some of those tools included practical things like a gas card, a brand-new computer, and uniforms, all provided to Jasmine free of charge to ensure she was poised to succeed.

Jasmine worked hard and amped up her soft skills along the way. “Time management was a skill that was tested the most…making sure all documentation was up to date as well as immunization records. I was definitely tested with making sure everything was on time to not slow down my success!”

All that hard work and willingness to grow paid off. In just three months, Jasmine’s gained a Phlebotomy Technician certification, completed clinicals at RUSH University Medical Center, and secured employment at RUSH as a phlebotomist!

As for how that new job is going? Here’s what Jasmine has to say: “My favorite thing about my new job is that I’m comfortable with waking up and going to work every day. Most people don’t love what they do for work. I honestly can say that I do!”

While enjoying the fruits of her labor, Jasmine continues to plan for the future, with the help of her trusty career coach. The two are discussing furthering her education and career, with a CMA certification as a possible next step.

Jasmine has clearly benefited from her time at YJC and made remarkable progress in a short amount of time. Her advice for other young people who might want to make similar strides: “Take the program and resources given to you seriously! You are given everything you need to succeed in whatever you start; stay focused!”

Jasmine, we’re impressed by your fast progress and applaud the focus and determination you showed to make it happen! We look forward to supporting you as you launch further down the path of your dreams.
