CAREER PATH: Cybersecurity/information technology
Demor graduated from high school in 2020, entering a job market—and a world—marked by upheaval and uncertainty. It got him off to a challenging start, and he bounced from one retail job to another until he discovered a professional passion: information technology (I.T.)
This discovery was both exciting and daunting: Now he knew what he wanted to do, but he wasn’t sure how to start. That’s where YJC came in.
Demor enrolled as a client and started working with career coach Charlette, who answered all his questions, talked him through this goals, and connected him with resources to help meet them. In August, he signed up for YJC’s summer I.T. cohort, in which he and other young people learned JavaScript from a coding professional. Demor successfully completed the program, earning an industry-recognized JavaScript certificate (and the bragging rights to having learned a complicated coding language in two short months).
Now that he’s had hands-on experience with coding and app development, and has discovered that he both enjoyed and excelled at it, Demor plans to pursue further education in the I.T. world, with an end goal of securing a position in the cybersecurity field. Demor’s coach Charlette describes him as “a strategic thinker,” sharing that “he’s very active in the planning of his future.” YJC is currently helping him secure a grant to attend school to solidify that future, and once he’s in school, Demor will have access, through YJC, to tutoring, gas and bus cards for transportation, and anything else he needs to help him successfully complete the program.
“Demor is a highly driven and ambitious young man with a sharp strategic mind,” says Charlette. “With a well-crafted plan that blends passion and foresight, Demor is not just on track, but primed to build an exciting and rewarding career. His future is bright, and he is ready to make his mark!”
