KAYLA

AGE: 25
POSITION:
Information Systems Security Officer
EMPLOYER: UChicago Argonne LLC National Laboratory

25-year-old Kayla wanted to launch a career in cybersecurity but found that her lack of certifications and experience made it tough to find a job. So she came to YJC.

Kayla started with workforce readiness training, where she learned core skills like time management and interviewing techniques. Then she moved into the I.T. career pathway program, where she successfully earned her CompTIA A+ certification and developed and strengthened skills in things like:

  • building and managing data networks

  • troubleshooting network issues

  • routing and switching

  • risk assessment

  • data recovery

An impressive toolkit, to be sure.

And an effective one—Kayla soon landed a job as a help desk support agent at GSD Technologies. And seven months later, she began her dream career as an information systems security officer at Argonne National Laboratory. Kayla enjoys her job and appreciates the opportunity to provide protection for the Department of Energy’s network, infrastructure, and information systems. Talk about an important and meaningful position!

Working with her YJC career coach Destanee along the way has been “a great experience.” Kayla describes her coach as “very professional and supportive and celebrated my accomplishments.”

Destanee has laudatory words for Kayla too: “Kayla came to YJC with a clear vision. She showed up dedicated to her future and knew she was going to pursue a career in I.T. She showed up, put in the work, and believed in herself. Congrats, Kayla!”

Kayla’s plans for the future include accruing more CompTIA certifications to support her career and earning a master’s degree in cybersecurity management and policy. YJC is on stand-by with follow-up services to connect Kayla with relevant resources and help guide her as she continues her career journey.

Kayla’s advice for other young people who want to achieve their own career success? “Think of a career path that is attainable and consider positions that will be stepping stones to your dream career. Every position offers knowledge to gain, and each opportunity is a step towards your future. Be consistent and confident, and always know you can ask for support along your career journey.”
