POSITION: Cardiac Telemetry Technician
EMPLOYER: University of Chicago Medicine
Background
We’re delighted to introduce you to Ariel, 2024’s first Client of the Month. In her words: “I’m a young woman from Chicago. I’m a fur mom, and I entered the medical field when I was around 18 or 19. I’ve worked in a couple different medical settings such as specialty pharmacies, hospitals, and clinics.”
Coming to Youth Job Center
Ariel shares, “YJC struck my interest when I saw the great things they did for others on their journey to a medical career.”
Here’s how she’s taken advantage of YJC’s programs:
She completed Workforce Readiness Training, where she learned how to create a great resume and ace an interview.
She participated in financial coaching with Trevor, who “gave me lots of insight on credit-building, saving, and just all around a better understanding of financial literacy.”
She participates in ongoing career coaching with Sara, which she thoroughly enjoys. “The best part of the [YJC] program is having a career coach who cares and is also providing the best help and benefits that this program has to offer.”
Here’s how she’s already giving back:
Because she enjoyed her classes and had a strong grasp of the material, she’s going to tutor YJC’s other health-care clients part-time as part of a Paid Work Experience.
Where Ariel is Now
She’s recently certified through Chicago Community Learning Center to work as a CNA, Phlebotomy Technician, PCT, or EKG Technician. (She loved her EKG class.)
She’s currently using her EKG Tech license—her favorite—as a Cardiac Telemetry Technician at U of Chicago Medicine. “This has helped me learn more about how the medical field operates, different career paths inside the medical field, and a deeper understanding of the medical terminology.”
Her long-term goal is to become a physical therapist or veterinarian. “YJC is helping me get to and from school along with setting me up with potential job positions in my field of interest.”
Bonus Question
We asked Ariel what advice she would give herself if she could go back in time. Her answer? “If I could go back in time, I’d advise my past self to sign up for the program sooner.”
Congratulations on all your success, Ariel! Your future is bright, and we can’t wait to see where it takes you.
